Federal North Proposal

A 3-story 24,000 SF mixed use building is planned as part of the effort to revitalize the once thriving neighborhood commercial corridor. The proposal consists of a blend of renovated historic structure and new structure. The facade was designed to continue the texture of existing 100+ year old neighboring buildings in modern context. Although commissioned by a private developer, community involvement was vital in determining the use and design of the building at the neighborhood key corner.

Mintwood Lofts

A 90-year old window factory at the edge of a commercial district was proposed to be converted into 16 units, totaling 34,00 SF. The building had potential for spectacular loft units as one-story high steel roof trusses span the entire width of the building with continuous clerestory and 12 ft high windows on both sides. Most units were designed to have private yards or roof deck access to accommodate pets.

Bingham Street

Two “For Sale” infill units and on “For Sale” restored unit within a Historical district for low to moderate income. The project was developed by the South Side Local Development Corporation.

Historic Deutschtown Homes

Renovation, partial reconstruction, and new construction of 28 single family homes from the late 1800s in the designated Deutschtown Historic District of Pittsburgh. Originally designed in phases for the East Allegheny Community Council to serve as affordable housing, these homes improved the image of the neighborhood and resulted in surrounding homes reaching market rates.

Observatory Hill Homes

The steep site allowed the opportunity to design affordable homes with great views of the green valley below. Taking advantage of the site, the 3 new construction and 3 rehab units have amenities such as a living room with 10′ high ceiling, three large bedrooms, a street-side integral garage, and, on the lower level, a second full bath and future family room.

 

South Oakland Housing

Construction of four detached, single family infill houses with parking in the rear. The three-story gable front houses were designed to fit in with the massing of neighboring homes. The base unit has two bedrooms and one bath with an option to add two more bedrooms and another bath on the 3rd floor. The project was developed for the Oakland Planning & Development, with URA assistance.

North Negley Condo

Complete renovation of a large dilapidated and previously altered Colonial Revival home and conversion into 3 condominiums for East Liberty Development, Inc. and the Highland Park Community Club, both non-profit community-based organizations. Integral garages are provided for 2 units while all units have access to individual basement storage and porches.

Quiet Storm Apartments

Interior and exterior rehabilitation of residential portion of a deteriorated Queen Anne building in Friendship for Friendship Development Associates, a non-profit community-based organization. Three rental apartment units were created in the same structure that also contains a coffee shop and an apartment unit in an older front addition.

Voskamp Villa Townhouses

Nine infill townhouse units for low to moderate income housing were designed to fill a partially vacant site and to promote the return of owner occupancy in urban neighborhoods once filled with family owned homes. The project was developed by the Spring Garden Neighborhood Council, Inc. with URA assistance.
